GRAFTON tenpin bowler Ashley Clark has been honoured after being named male Sportsperson at the Country Challenge State Teams Final at Cambelltown in Sydney.

It is the first time a tenpin bowler from the Grafton area has won the award in the tournament's 17-year history.

"It was excellent and a total shock," Clark said. "I'm very honoured."

The male and female Sportsperson Award is voted on by bowlers from all participating teams and they are not allowed to vote for their own team members. Ten male and ten female teams competed in the annual Country Challenge.

Clark 29, led the Grafton team which won the Far North Coast Championships. They finished 7th at Cambelltown.

The other team members were Richard Brown, Geoff Heath, Brian McInnes, Paul Miller and Trevor Apps.

"We bowled exceptionally well, but were out smarted in nearly every game," Clark said.
