Kelly Bowling made her mum cry the other day.

Not because she had done anything wrong, but because she decided to enter this year's Jacaranda Queen competition.

"Mum always wanted a girl who would do ballet and that kind of thing, but I was never into it, so when I said I was entering, she was pretty happy," the 19-year-old said.

Ms Bowling decided this was the year to enter Jacaranda because she was not committed to full-time work.

"I work part-time at Grafton Physiotherapy and as a Nutrimetics consultant, so I thought this year was the one to really do something for the community," she said.

She has already planned numerous fundraising events including a dinner dance at Tucabia on May 28, a mystery bus tour and a Jacaranda bush fair.
