Jaca title for late bloomer

By TONY WHITE

FOR much of last week Grafton golfer Fran Forman was bed ridden with a heavy dose of flu.

Until as late as Monday night she was unsure of taking part in the annual Westlawn Finance sponsored Jacaranda Ladies Open at Grafton Golf Course on Tuesday.

Despite her illness and not having picked up a club for more than 12 days, Forman courageously triumphed to record her first major victory in the scratch event.

Forman, who played off 15, shot 82 to edge out Maclean's Helen McFarlane by one shot.

"I don't know what happened, it was a very big surprise, a huge surprise" Forman said.

"There were some really good local and visiting lady golfers.

"I guess it was just one of those days. It is a very big thrill winning it, something I never expected.

"I just popped up on the right day."

Grafton Women Golfers club captain Marie Keynes said Forman's win was very well received.

"Fran played really nice golf, she was thrilled to pieces," Keyes said yesterday.

"I had lunch with her yesterday and I don't think you'll wipe the smile off her face for ages."

Forman played in a 'gun group' which included this year's Ladies May Tournament winner Barbara Moore from Yamba and local golfing legend, Jean Dahl.

On the front nine Forman had six pars and 40 strokes and on the outward nine, one birdie and one par from 42 strokes.

"I birdied the 11th after a very poor drive," Forman recalled. "I'm not a long hitter but I managed to stay out of trouble.

"I was lucky to chip and putt well. That's the strong part of my game.

"This is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I still can't believe it."

Forman only took up golf eight years ago but has steadily decreased her handicap and Tuesday's win was her first major tournament victory against a field of 84 leading local and visiting women golfers.

Grafton's Pam Kenway won the handicap section with a nett 64 from another local, Janelle Hilton with 66.

Other winners were:

Scratch: Div 1 - Dianne Chard (Airlie Beach) 84; Div 2 - Joyce Brown (Grafton) 91; Div 3 - Debra Tennant (Grafton) 93; Div 4 - Jean O'Brien (Lismore).

Handicap: Kay Pearson (Byron Bay) 71; Div 2 - Aldath Pearson (Woolgoolga) 71; Div 3 - Val Forster (Woodburn) 71; Div 4 - Kay Eccleston (Grafton) 73.

Stableford: Div 1 - M Payne (Nambucca) 37pts; Div 2 - Shirley Avery (Grafton) 38; Div 3 Liz Smith (Grafton) 38; Div 4 - D Watson (Maclean) 35.
