Jail upgrade locked in

TENDERS have closed for the proposed $140,000 maintenance and upgrading of the medium security wing at Grafton Jail.

State Justice Minister John Hatzistergos has been inside the prison for talks with the jail governor about the work, which he said will begin in the coming weeks.

Mr Hatzistergos also toured the prison, showing particular interest in the detoxification unit.

Developed at a cost of $390,000, the unit allows inmates with serious drug or alcohol issues to receive better treatment.

The minister said Grafton Jail was an important part of the New South Wales correctional system.

"Work on the medium security wing will ensure the prison facilities are in good or- der," he said.
