EACH year, a group of brave Grafton girls enter the Showgirl competition for a range of reasons, including making new friends and gaining confidence.

The latest entrant, 19-yearold Karina Guana, is looking forward to those aspects of the competition as well as the agricultural side of the show.

"It will be good to help gain confidence and self-esteem and I think I'll have fun," she said.

The former Catherine McAuley College student, who completed school in 2003, volunteers at the Grafton Post Office and Whitehouse Cafe as part of the Clarence Valley Community Programs transition to work program.

"Mum's OK about me entering but she's a bit nervous about some things, I think. But it should be good because it's something I've never done before."
