Lasting memories of a Papal audience

FORMER Federal Member for Page, Ian Robinson, has paid tribute to the late Pope John Paul II, saying he was a 'beacon of faith' for the world.

Mr Robinson said he was moved to meet the Holy Father at the Vatican while leading an Australian Parliamentary delegation to a conference in Rome in 1982.

"He (the Pope) was a man of remarkable Christian endeavour who influenced, for the better, the great reform to remove Communism, curb dictatorships, and inspire social reforms and compassion."

Meanwhile, Junction Hill's Margaret O'Connor is pictured below, presenting the late Pope with a painting of Australia's first saint, Mary Mackillop, at St Mary's Catholic Church, Sydney, in 1995.
