Lawrence a top place for playtime
By TOBY WALKER
A WEEKLY playgroup session held on Friday mornings at the Lawrence preschool has been recognised as the best in country New South Wales at a recent awards ceremony in Sydney.
The playgroup was nominated in the best single session playgroup in the State after a submission put together by group member Shirley Green was awarded first place.
Mrs Green, group coordinator Natalie Ensbey and zone coordinator Belinda Walker travelled to Sydney to accept the award on behalf of all the parents and children who had helped make the playgroup a top place for playtime.
Mrs Ensbey said the win came as a bit of a surprise to everyone involved with the playgroup, but credited the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere that had been nurtured by participating parents for helping gain the top prize.
"I think it's how we approach members," she said.
"We have discipline and health policies which have been formalised, but I think it's mostly the way people feel welcome and know they can come here without worrying about little cliques of parents and that sort of thing," she said.
"It's a really cohesive group."
Mrs Ensbey said she became involved eight years ago when her son was just 18 months old and parenting was new to her.
With the group catering to the play needs of children up to six years of age, the weekly meetings were exactly what she was looking for.
The award might be welcome recognition for the playgroup, but the fun has only just begun as summer approaches.
On October 21, Angourie Oval in Yamba will host a fun day for all playgroups in the Lower Clarence area as they celebrate National Playgroup Day.
