Local lifesavers star on New Zealand tour

FOUR local surf lifesavers have helped the New South Wales Country Surf Lifesaving team win a tri-series event in New Zealand.

Red Rock Corindi Surf Life Saving Club members Scott McCartney and Ryan Twigg and Yamba Surf Life Saving Club members Jacob Lollback and Alyce Bennett were among the standout performers on the 20-member NSW team. The series concluded on Wednesday at Piha.

Bennett was vice-captain of the NSW team.

While details from all of the carnivals were not available yesterday, the results from the opening two carnivals indicate the Clarence Valley competitors were in scintillating form.

Lollback won both the Under-16 board and ironman events at the opening two carnivals.

McCartney, who celebrated his 18th birthday while on tour, won the Under-19 ironman and Open board race at the first carnival at Ruakaka, while Twigg finished first in the Under-19 surf race.

Bennett won the Under-19 board at the opening two carnivals.

Lollback and Twigg teamed to finish third in the Under-19 tube rescue in the first carnival at Ruakaka.

The four will arrive in Sydney today in time for the weekend's NSW Premiership Series carnival at Cronulla.

More results from the New Zealand tour will appear as they come to hand.
