Lucky speedster better for a run

SHEENA'S Lucky will today rely on her brilliant early speed to upset the fastest qualifier, Kulu, in the Troy Carter Plumbing Final at the Grafton Greyhound Raceway today.

The Maxine Gleeson-trained Sheena's Lucky led them up in her heat when she was run down by Kulu, but it is worth noting that it was Sheena's Lucky's first start in 10 weeks.

Despite also being almost one kilogram up in weight, Sheena's Lucky only went under by three-quarters of a length in the handy time of 23.45 seconds.

While the John Clarson-trained Kulu must be respected, he is not well drawn in box 1, with three good beginners boxed directly on his outside.

The action on the track is certainly heating up in the lead up to next week's Grafton Derby and Oaks with a sensational field to do battle in the top graded, Grafton District Services Club Stake over 407 metres.

Many of the leading contenders for the Derby are racing, including the Robert Cooke-trained Hot Syrup, Gone Walking for Margaret Dwyer, Quiz Kid for Jim Robinson and the Marlene Ellis-trained Fleet Assassin.

With not a split inch between these four runners it will come down to the runner which has fared the best in the box draw and that runner is Hot Syrup.

Although box 5 may not sound ideal, he should be able to hold out his main rivals as they are all boxed on his outside, with the wide running Quiz Kid, likely to run cover for him.

There will be a number of promising youngsters unearthed today, with seven sensational heats of the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association Easter Maiden set for decision.

With an attractive $2000 on offer to the winner of next week's final and a free service to one of the countries top stud dogs, Elite State, worth $2750, many of the Region's top trainers have all converged with their finely tuned youngsters, hoping to be the one to take the prize.

It is very hard to line up these youngsters, as many are having their first race start, but what can be guaranteed is that there will be plenty of action in the betting ring with a number of big punting stables being represented in the heats.

Surely this is a race meeting not to be missed.
