Minnie fires up

MINNIE Water residents found that it was a piece of cake to raise money for tsunami victims when they banded together with the Minnie Water Rural Fire Service to hold a cake stall.

Headed by Ivy Souris, the fundraiser made $1500 in the space of just two hours, a sum that fire brigade secretary Judy Mussared said was unexpected.

"We had hoped to raise between $300 and $500, so it was a bit of a shock when we realised how much people had donated in such a small space of time," Ms Mussared said.

"We just distributed around 200 flyers around the community and set up a table in front of the Minnie Water store.

"In the first hour we were overwhelmed with people donating cakes and money ... one family donated a cake and then bought it back.

"I have honestly never seen so many cakes and biscuits, so much cooking in my life."

The funds raised by the cake stall have been donated to the Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsun- amis Appeal.
