Out of the driver?s seat

FOR THE past 23 years, the Jacaranda Queen party has been chauffeured to functions by Denise Slingsby during Jacaranda week.

But this year, she will be driven around, as she takes on the role of Matron of Honour.

Mrs Slingsby was nominated by the South Grafton Medical Centre, where she works as a receptionist.

Every year she takes a week of annual leave during Jacaranda to drive the girls around; even patients know Mrs Slingsby will be off during the week. It was this dedication to the festival which led to her nomination.

"I have really enjoyed the friendships I've made over the years and meeting all the visitors who come into town," she said.

"I've always gone to functions like the fashion parade which I've always found interesting, but this year I'll be seeing a different side of it."

Mrs Slingsby has lived in Grafton virtually her entire life and ran for Jacaranda Queen in 1978.

And next year? Mrs Slingsby said she will go back to driving.
