Owners? patience rewarded

THE fortunes of a group of high profile Sydney-based rugby and golfing mates turned full circle when Rocking On won yesterday's $160,000 XXXX Gold Grafton Cup (2400m).

Last year several of the owners in the syndicate that race the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding came to Grafton to watch another of their horses, King Cadenza, compete at the annual carnival.

King Cadenza, however, trained by John Shelton, finished last.

"It's great to go from last to first and win the biggest race up here (Grafton)," Rocking On's part-owner, semi-retired financier Nick Dawson, said.

"This (Grafton) Cup was our biggest win since Miss Unava, who was trained by Geoff Maynes."

The syndicate is headed by Joe Manning's wife, 'Loo'.

Waterhouse spells many of her horses on Manning's large agistment property at Cootamundra.

"Winning the Grafton Cup is something we'll all remember," Dawson said.
