Passing the hat around

By EMMA CORNFORD

YOU know racing season is around the corner when racing outfits are the display of choice in shops around town.

Then there are the hats. On Saturday $1000 was raised for the Purple Pearls fundraising group thanks to a hat parade at the Grafton Regional Gallery.

Purple Pearls member Lisa Dougherty said it was an opportunity for women to shop while seeing the latest racing accessories.

"We had 100 ladies come along and two milliners showed their hats on the day ? Sandra McVeigh from Brisbane and Trish Pidcott from Yamba," Mrs Dougherty said.

Local shops also displayed their wares as the ladies dined on a two-course lunch.

"It's a good warm up to start getting everyone ready for the racing season."

In three years the committee has raised $15,000 through a marquee at the races, and this year funds will go towards projects for young people in the Clarence Valley.
