Pilley performs in Windy City
By ANDREW DENT
YOUNG Yamba star Cameron Pilley moved into the second round of the Windy City Open squash tournament in Chicago when he dispatched English qualifier Scott Handley in straight games on Thursday.
Pilley beat the Englishman 11-3 11-9 11-8 to set up a second round clash with either fellow Australian Anthony Ricketts or Brazilian Rafael Alacorn.
He was joined in the second round by world number two David Palmer, who took just over an hour to beat Italian Davide Bianchetti in four games.
Palmer dropped the first game but went on to beat Bianchetti 6-11 11-6 11-9 11-8 and will now face the winner of the match between Canadians Shawn Delierre and Graham Ryding.
The third Australian playing on the opening day, Dan Jenson, went down to world number one Amr Shabana in straight games, the Egyptian winning 11-10 (3/1) 11-4 11-6.
Pilley looked in control from the start of the match and quickly had Handley on the back foot, controlling the court and the tempo of the game.
Pilley and Handley are training partners and know each other well.
"We play each other about three times a week so we know each other's game," Pilley said, adding he tried to keep his mind on the job during his opening match.
"I can have problems concentrating so today made a real effort to focus," he said.
The eight remaining first round matches will be played Friday.
