KANGAROOS are not exactly rare in Yamba, but normally the golf course and oval provide the best opportunity to catch Australia's national animal in action.

So when diners at Pippi's Cafe and Restaurant on Yamba Hill caught sight of this joey cruising along on Sunday morning, it did come as quite a shock. The joey and its mother were first spotted near Star of the Sea Convent before WIRES was called to relocate them.

WIRES officer Stewart Close was called in and managed to capture the mother fairly swiftly, but the joey alluded his grasp. After chasing the animal up and down Clarence Street, Mr Close located it hiding in a backyard. It was rounded up and moved to the golf course where it was reunited with its mother.
