Playing for their State

LOCAL teenagers Holly Butcher and Kyle Lawler flew out of Grafton yesterday for the annual NSW CHS v Queensland Secondary Schools State Challenge Championships from August 9 to 13 in Ipswich, Queensland.

The Grafton High School students are members of the 20-strong NSW CHS squash team that is managed by South Grafton High's, Joann Foley.

Foley has managed the team for the past five years.

"It's always a close tussle against the Queenslanders, but we have a good squad and hopefully we can come back with the trophy," Foley said.

This is the 23rd clash between the two states and currently each state has won 11-times.

Butcher, who has also qualified for the Australian Squash Titles later this year, will play singles and doubles in the Under-15 girls section while Lawler will play singles and doubles in the open boys.

NSW and Queensland will also clash in the Open girls and Under-15 boys.

NSW have dominated the Championships in recent years, winning the overall title eight-times since 1994 but Queensland bounced back to win in 2003 (Brisbane) and last year in Coffs Harbour.
