Poms turn on the ref

SYDNEY. (AAP) ? It was not only Australians ripping their hair out over referee Graham Poll's bungling display, his country's own media have torn shreds off the whistleblower.

The Sun labelled the Englishman's error-riddled performance in Australia's match with Croatia as 'Three Card Thick'.

The referee, understood to be in the reckoning to officiate the World Cup final before the match, showed Croatian defender Josip Simunic three yellow cards before finally handing him a red.

The brain explosion left Australian captain Mark Viduka shaking his head.

"I thought the ref had already booked him and I told him so," Viduka said.

It was described 'as one of the most error-strewn in the tournament's history' by The Guardian.

"The English official Graham Poll seemed to be overwhelmed by a frenetic contest that has deservedly borne Australia off to a last 16 match," it said.
