WHILE serious punters do their own research, many casual 'flutterers' tend to rely on word of mouth or the panel of experts whose advice is published in the sports pages every week.

This is usually a fairly reliable source for betting but, like everything associated with gambling, it's down to luck just as much as it is knowledge.

There are plenty among the July racing crowd who, like me, choose their horses if they look pretty, or if you like the jockey's colours, or if the name of the beast has some relevance to you.

Here's a different tactic for those looking for something out of the box.
