FIVE local rugby union players have been selected to represent Far North Coast (FNC) against Mid North Coast in round one of the Richardson Shield NSW Country Championships at Toormina Rugby Park tonight.

Adrian Miller will play fullback, Anthony Begg fly-half, Tristan Allard on the wing and Sean Riley in the second row. The quartet are all members of the Yamba Buccaneers first grade team.

Justin Spurway, from the Grafton Redmen, will play on the wing for FNC.

FNC coach Mick Claes said he was confident of winning the match and bringing home the Observer trophy.

"We were beaten by Mid North Coast last year and we want to bring home the silverware this time," Claes said.

"While it's the first game of the season, Far North Coast has a good line up of quality players.

"It's a well balanced side and we're expecting results."

The bulk of the FNC team come from the Casino Bulls and Ballina Seahorses.

First grade kicks off at 7.30pm.

nTODAY'S scheduled mixed trial between Yamba Buccaneers and Grafton Redmen at Rugby Park, South Grafton, has been cancelled.

The Buccaneers were unable to field enough players for the trial to go ahead due to heavy representative numbers and other player commitments.

With the FNC premiership scheduled to start on April 1, both clubs were keen to get some match practice in before the season proper commences.
