Sex offender, 47, jailed for six years

A 47-YEAR-OLD Woolgoolga resident was sentenced to six years jail in the Grafton District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to having sexual intercourse with his four-year-old grand-daughter.

He will serve two years of parole on his release in 2011.

The man, who for legal reasons cannot be named, pleaded guilty in earlier court proceedings to one count of sexual intercourse with a person under 10 after an incident at his Woolgoolga home in December last year.

In that incident the man was babysitting the girl at his home when he gave her one beverage, which the judge found to be alcoholic, while she was swimming.

He then swam with her naked in his pool, before putting his penis in her mouth while they showered together.

After he took the girl home, she was observed by her parents to be unsteady on her feet and stumbling over her words and alcohol could be smelt on her breath.

She was taken to Coffs Harbour for examination and returned a urine alcohol test of 0.016.

Semen matching the DNA profile of her grandfather was also found on her underpants.

The man didn't deny the accusa- tions in interviews with police, but claimed it was an accident and he thought the girl had put his penis in her mouth.

A psychologist's report conducted after the man's arrest showed him to be remorseful for his actions.

In sentencing, Judge Blackmore said even though the offender pleaded guilty and had no previous criminal record, a long custodial sentence was in order.
