South fire crews kept busy

SOUTH Grafton fire crews had to attend more than a chemical spill yesterday morning.

Earlier, they were called to a fire near Bendigo Bank in South Grafton.

The fire, which was in a wheelie bin next to the bank, was reported just after midnight.

South Grafton fire station commander Dennis Pye said the heat of the blaze was enough to melt the bank's power board.

"We put out the fire and then stayed there to provide fire protection until Country Energy came and fixed the electricity supply.

"It only affected Bendigo Bank and the residents upstairs ... and was under control by 1.06am."

The blaze was the second wheelie bin to be set alight at the bank since December.
