South young guns hold their nerve

SOUTH Grafton Primary School cricket team had to endure some nerve-tingling final overs before finally subduing Westport in a PSSA cricket match at JJ Lawrence Field on Wednesday.

Batting first South Grafton made 79 from 24.2 overs.

Ryan MacDonald batted well for 13 and was supported by Jeremy Cooper, 11, and Matt O'Malley, 11.

Westport started slowly in their 25-over run chase, pinned down by some excellent bowling and fielding.

Shaun Van Der Ham and Matt O'Malley removed the danger batsmen and a run out had Westport 4/23 after 13 overs.

Dylan Furey caused some anxious moments with some big hitting 37no, but the South boys held their nerve to win by six.

Great bowling and fielding from the team won the game, defending a good total.

Brendan Cleaver bowled impressively for 2/14 and Rhys Nelson and Josh Stevens were outstanding in the field.

The boys now play the winner of Wyrallah Road and Murwillumbah East in the North Coast final.
