SPAR, Putting the super in supermarket

By ADRIAN MILLER

FROM the humble beginnings of a one-person store, SPAR Express in Yamba has achieved great things in its 11-year history.

Owners Philip Moore and Angus Suttor were rewarded for their hard work and dedication last weekend when they won the SPAR Retailer of the Year Award at a presentation ceremony at Conrad Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast.

Their achievement is even more remarkable when you consider that neither of them had any retail business experience when they started the store.

Mr Moore was a school teacher from Sydney, while Mr Suttor was a farmer from Bathurst.

"We didn't have any retail experience at all, we had to learn everything from scratch as we went along," Mr Moore said.

Mr Moore said while they knew they were nominated for the award, actually winning it never crossed their minds.

"We were quite shocked to win it actually," he said.

"We knew we were one of the five nominated ... but it was quite surprising when they called us out as winners, it was not something we were expecting."
