A HANDFUL of dedicated Clar- ence Valley policemen walked away with special awards from a ceremony in Grafton on Thursday. A few, like newly-appointed senior constable Peter Barnier, received accolades for their police skills in volatile situa-

tions. Snr Cst Barnier, of Lawrence, was awarded a Region Com- mander's Commendation for his handling of a siege at Wilcannia in August 2005. The commendation was for his involvement in a domestic dispute which turned into a dangerous siege. Mr Barnier said it was a situation that required him to

draw on his seven years of police experience. "We had a siege for a while and tried to negotiate," he said. "It's one of those things you have to make a decision there and then on the best course of action. "You just hope the decision you make at the time is the right one because you don't have time to contemplate."

A NSW police medal for 10- years service and a rural crime spokespersons certificate of mer- it also was given to sergeant Steven Marshall; Paul Hyland collected a North Region Award and the appointment to the rank of sergeant was acknowl- edged for sergeant Volker Reuhe, of Yamba. To catch all the action turn to page nine for a picture spread.
