Speedway thrills and spills

By GREG COOMBES

THE Mr Modified Series lived up to its reputation of being an exciting format both for drivers and spectators alike as Lismore's Stuart Herne emerged as the overall victor on Tuesday night.

It was not until after an action-packed race however.

After just four laps of the 50 scheduled, series leader Steve Wright flipped, which tore the roof from the car and came to rest upside down.

"These Mr Modified points are hard to get," said Steve.

"We are up against it for Lismore now."

The same accident claimed 'Lightning' Luke Oldfield, with damage to the front and rear.

Luke was pushed to the infield pits for repairs.

Newly-crowned Australian Champion Mark Robinson moved into the lead and looked to have the race-winning pace while Herne struggled in traffic.

At the halfway mark, it was Robinson from Herne and at the restart of the second half, it looked like Robinson had the speed needed.

But the changes in set-up to the Farmer Charlies Chev of Stuart Herne showed, when at lap 36, Stuart passed Robinson for the lead.

Oldfield had his crew working frantically, and after making it to the rear on the restart, had moved into third position.

The race was drawing to a close when a spun car in turn 1 brought on the yellows with just two laps to go.

Herne's lead of half-a-lap had now gone, and Robinson with Oldfield, were now nose to tail.

What happened in the following two laps even shocked the most ardent speedway followers.

Sensing a victory, Robinson lunged at the race leader Herne, which resulted in Robinson spinning on the track.

At exactly the same time, Herne cut a tyre, which sent the former Australian Champion into the wall.

It was a mad scramble to the finish line, with Oldfield taking the honours for the second 25 laps.

The overall race winner is calculated from combining both results from the first 25 laps and the second, giving Herne victory over Robinson and a consistent Aaron Suffolk third.

Focus now turns to the deciding round 3 at Bartercard Lismore Speedway this Saturday night, where the Modifieds are a part of a double header featuring the USA v Australia Test Match.
