Spinal injuries for fishing fall victim

AN elderly man was injured when he fell while fishing off rocks on Tuesday night. The Daily Examiner was unable yesterday to confirm where the accident occurred, despite numerous attempts. The man was taken to Maclean Hospital where he was found to have serious spinal injuries. At 10pm the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter transferred the man to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment. The man was in intensive care in a serious condition yesterday afternoon. Rock fishing is one of the most dangerous sports in Australia and accounts for a large percentage of drowning deaths each year. To reduce the risks before going rock fishing ensure you check and understand the swell, weather, tide conditions and take time to observe conditions of the place you choose to fish. Always wear lightweight clothing, non slip footwear, head protection and never fish alone. Take extreme care walking on wet or weedy rocks, or climbing over large boulders to get to your chosen location.
