Surprise, I want to be showgirl
By Emma Cornford
Latest Grafton Showgirl entrant Karla Bursle didn't tell her two brothers she was entering the competition ? but now they know.
The 19-year-old Waterview Heights resident said she wanted to wait for the paper to come out before her brothers and grandparents found out she would run for the title.
Miss Bursle, who is studying a certificate four in animal care by correspondance, only decided on Wednesday that she would enter the competition.
"It gave mum a bit of a headache when I told her because after I registered I said 'let's go shopping' because I needed to buy a dress and a skirt because I didn't have either," she said.
"I just saw another (showgirl entrant) in the paper and saw it as a challenge ... so I thought I'd have a go."
As well as studying, Ms Bursle is also a member of the Waterview Heights Rural Fire Service where she has volunteered for the past four years.
"I'm usually on the show gates with the fire brigade so every year I end up going to the show and seeing the ring events ... but this will be a different way of seeing it."
