Swimmers survive

TWO 14-year-old girls are lucky to be alive after becoming caught in a rip at Brooms Head beach on Saturday morning.

Life guard supervisor Jim Baird said the two girls were swimming outside the flags when they became caught in the strong-running northerly tide.

Mr Baird said the girls made it back onto the beach after they were rescued by a boardrider. They were treated for shock and given oxygen by lifeguards.

The girls were taken to Maclean District Hospital for further treatment. They were released on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Baird said it was imperative people swim between the flags, no matter how calm the surf appeared to be.

"These girls were very lucky to survive," he said.
