THE community of Iluka is mourning the tragic death of Gary Dunbar on Friday night.
The 44-year-old grandfather died of a heart attack at Sedgers Reef Hotel surrounded by family and friends.
A teacher's aide at Iluka Public School for seven years, Mr Dunbar worked with students with special needs, helping them integrate into the school community.
Members of his family said Gary was a very loving person, with a kind heart who loved his wife and family.
"Gary was highly committed to life, children, his family and friends," the Dunbar family said.
"A very jovial person, Gary was always happy and joking.
"Gary was one in a million. He loved horseracing, playing pool, watching the Iluka Cossacks play rugby, karaoke and the Broncos.
"Gary was loved by everyone who knew him."
Iluka Public School principal Mark Dennis said Gary's death was a huge loss for the community and the school.
"He was a very valuable member of staff who had a wonderful empathy with children," he said.
Close friend Kim Hammond said Gary was a wonderful man, 'great with kids, a great husband and father'.
"He would do anything for anybody," she said.
A close friend of the Dunbar family, Tracey Farrell, said the whole town was rallying to support the family.
And a special family request: 'Go the Maroons'.
