The one that didn?t get away

By David Bancroft

For any angler out there, this would have to be close to the ultimate catch.

Recognised as one of the best sports fish around, this 8.8kg mangrove jack, caught by Wooli resident Trevor Porch, would have given an almighty fight.

Because of its unusually large size, it required verification to confirm its identity and was originally thought to be one of the biggest recorded. However, it is believed mangrove jacks up to 15kg have been taken in very deep water. This one was landed off Wooli.

Regular mangrove jack angler Calvin Peuser said he had been fishing for one of these monsters for years and had caught numerous up to 3kg, but nothing like Mr Porch's catch. He had hooked them, but because of their fighting capabilities, never been able to land one.

"I use 65 pound braid line and they can snap it as if it is nothing," he said.

"There's nothing like it when you hook one ... everything squeaks and cracks and pops."

Mr Peuser said he hooked a fish a couple of weeks ago he first thought was a jack, but got to the side of the boat and it was a stingray 'that would have filled a trailer'.
