Thugs deserve jail: MP

THUGS who assault police should get mandatory jail terms, says NSW Member for Clarence Steve Cansdell.

Mr Cansdell said yesterday he would push for the Coalition to adopt a policy of mandatory custodial sentences for people found guilty of assaulting police and emergency service workers.

Mr Cansdell is on a fact-finding mission in country NSW as the Nationals' spokesman on Rural and Regional Crime.

The MP said senior police officers had told him they needed more protection for cops on the beat.

"I was in Dubbo during the recent mob violence, where two police officers were injured, one seriously, and a police vehicle destroyed," he said.

"It was clear the police did not have the respect nor the resources to maintain law and order.

"Ambulance workers, police and emergency service volunteers deserve extra protection from rioters because they literally put their lives on the line to protect the community."
