Tom East dead, aged 79

AN introspective man with a love of bicycles was how Vivien Bonney described her father Tom East yesterday.

Mr East, the 79-year-old Grafton man who collided with a car while riding his bike in Grafton on July 4, died on Saturday at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. He had lived in the Clarence Valley since 1974, spending most of his time in Maclean.

"He renovated bikes for people in East Timor and was very active and mechanical," Ms Bonney said.

A keen Daily Examiner letter writer, Ms Bonney said her father was a dedicated reader and broad thinker who was happy to listen to people.

"He tried to understand the world and looked at the other side of life as well," she said.

"He was very popular with all the grandchildren and was always happy to tell them a story." Mr East is survived by his three children ? Vivien, Louise East and Michael East ? seven grandchildren and two great-

grandchildren.
