Valley rowers into Nationals semis

By TONY WHITE

CLARENCE Valley representatives at the Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania, have powered through to the semi-finals of their respective divisions.

Rachael See (Lower Clarence) and Ashleigh Peppernell (South Grafton High), a 2006 Daily Examiner Sports Star Of The Year top 10 finalist, brilliantly won heats of the girls' Under-17 single scull to go straight into the semi finals.

Lewis Hemphill, another DEX Sports Star finalist, and Brenton Ford, both representing Grafton Rowing Club, each made semi-finals by winning their heats of the boys' Under-17 single scull.

See, Peppernell, Saxon Ramon, Steffanie Colgrave and cox Johanna Tarrant, combined for a stunning heat win in the girls' Under-17 quad to go straight through to the semi-finals.

Against representatives from all Australian states, the Clarence Valley rowers are all tipped as definite final prospects.

Unfortunately for Tarrant, Ramon and Colgrave, the trio was beaten in repechage heats of the girls' Under-17 single scull.

Due to unsuitable water conditions and strong head winds, yesterday's regatta was postponed on two occasions.

Peppernell and Tes Garrand (Taree) were scheduled to compete in heats of the girls' Under-19 double and Hemphill and Ford in the boys' Under-17 double.

Semi-finals of the Under-17 boys' and girls' single scull and Under-17 girls' quad are scheduled for today.
