Grafton District Tennis Club

THIRTY-ONE junior tennis players from the Grafton District Association took to the Ballina/Alstonville courts in the first round of the Far North Coast Junior Development series on February 18.

The 10 and under boys saw Cody Rediger defeat Sean Butt in the semi-final, before succumbing 6-5 in the final.

The 10 and under girls saw five new Grafton players take to the courts.

Emily Allen defeated her sister, Georgia, in the semi-final, before losing 6-1 to Junction Hill's Kate Sneesby in the final.

Our other new faces were Bonne and Isabel Moon.

Thirty players contested the 12 and under boys event, so a semi-final spot was hard to come by.

Walter Rediger defeated Jack Chard in their semi-final, before losing 6-1 to Mullumbimby's Gene Healey.

Taylah Beckman, playing up two age groups, showed impressive form to make the semi-finals in the 14 and under girls.

However, Brittany Huxley stood between her and a finals berth.

Brittany came out firing, taking the semi 6-1, before defeating Lismore's Katy Paterson in the final.

The 14 and under double was achieved, with Harry Weatherstone defeating Junction Hill's Nick Crispin in the final, after disposing of Jake Sullivan in the semi-final.

It was great to see four Grafton reps in the 16 and under girls, with Natasha Crispin and Adrienne George contesting one semi-final. Adrienne took this set, with Natasha showing much improved form. Adrienne contested a close final before losing to Country 13 years Champion Lauren Teitzel.

The 16 and under boys saw close rivals Ben King and Philip Leaver contest one semi, with Ben outlasting Phil in a tie breaker.

Ben unfortunately was unable to reproduce this good form, going down in the final.

The 21 and under event saw a combined male and female event in the round robin stages, before Emma Power defeated Ballina's Madeleine Ilic in a tie breaker in the girls final.

The round robin series now moves to Tweed Heads before the Grafton club hosts their round on March 11.

Anyone wishing to enter the Grafton event should contact the Huxleys on 66422343 or the Pro Shop before March 6.
