Valley?s top athletes in the money

EIGHTEEN local athletes and coaches have won grants under the NSW Government Sport and Recreation Country Athletes Scheme.

The funding, $230,000, is used to assist talented young athletes in rural and remote areas to help access training, coaching and competitions.

"Funding under the Country Athletes Scheme helps provide talented country athletes with the same developmental opportunities available to their city counterparts," NSW Minister Tourism, Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori said.

The funds will be distributed among 309 athletes aged 18 and under, representing 63 different sports.

Local athletic recipients are: Cody Attwater (resides Swan Creek), athletics; Nathan Sullivan (Tucabia), disabled sport; Scott Garner (South Grafton), hockey; Amanda Whitby (Ulmarra), cricket; Kara Sutherland (South Grafton), cricket; Bonnie Miller-Tucker (Safety Beach), soccer; Ashleigh Peppernell (Arrawarra), rowing; Lewis Hemphill (Grafton), rowing; Martin Hemphill (Grafton), rowing; Matthew Cooper (Woombah), rowing; Rowan Hislop (Ashby Heights), rowing; Ryan McDougall (Hernani), snow skiing; Holly Butcher (Grafton), squash; Jacob Lollback (Grafton), surf life saving; Gabrielle King (Maclean), yachting and Thomas Scully (Maclean), yachting.

Jennifer Edwards (Ulmarra) and David Whitby (Ulmarra) were awarded grants for dressage and cricket respectively.
