Women's hockey

IT was bigger than Batman on Saturday at the Westlawn Finance hockey grand finals. Spectators were treated to a smorgasbord of entertainment, both on and off the field. Good hockey, organisation, weather and friends made for a big day out for all. Many families participated in the finals with the Thomas family -- mum, dad and the two girls all making appearances on the day. There were reported sightings of Carol Inmon early in the day and someone else in dark glasses and a big hat was observed sitting in her chair when her boys were playing in the men's A grade final. n In the first game of the day in C grade, McAuley Gold come away with a 3-1 win over Mixtures. McAuley were dominant in this grade all season and were well-deserved winners on the day. L Johnson, H Hartman and S Whitton did the damage up front for McAuley while M Richie featured strongly in the Mixtures' combination. J Edwards was awarded player of the final and McAuley gained the Best Attackers and Defenders awards for their grade. Beth Clifford was highest goal scorer for the season. n IF a Stealth Bomber crashes in a forest, will it make a sound? n IN blustery conditions, the B grade final the Sailors Hawks took on Kylies Kasuals. Sailors finished off ahead on the scorecard courtesy of player of the final, S Dalton's two goals. With a number of shots at goals in the first half, Kylies couldn't convert and the second half saw Sailors dominate, finding the back of the net. Sailors were minor and major premiers while Kylies took home the Best Attackers and Defenders awards, together with highest goal scorers in Kim Steele and Tina McLaren. n HAVE you ever wondered why they don't make the whole plane out of what they make the little black box out of? n CONDITIONS improved for the AR2 encounter between Demons Scotts and Barbarians. This was a classic tighter than Tom Jones' trousers clash with extra time needed to find a winner. Sharon Foster did the trick for Barbs, scoring the winning goal and picked up another trophy for her, 'pool room', getting the gong for highest goal scorer for the season. Jacki McGregor was a standout during the game, earning the player of the final award. n THE AR1 grand final created an upset with the youthful McAuley White combination defeating the Westlawn outfit 2-1.
