Woodford Dale man, 79, killed in accident
By RENEE FORD
THE tiny village of Woodford Dale is in mourning today after one of its residents, a 79-year-old man, was killed in a motor vehicle accident just south of the Lawrence ferry yesterday afternoon.
A woman, 73, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was airlifted from the scene by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter to Lismore Base Hospital at around 2pm suffering severe trauma, suspected spinal injuries and internal injuries. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
North Coast Area Health Service media manager Robin Osborne said the woman's condition was being assessed in the emergency department last night.
The usually quiet Woodford Dale Road, surrounded by farms, was a hive of activity as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene of the accident.
The rescue helicopter, fire brigade, police and emergency vehicles lined the stretch of road, with a single car off to the side lying on its roof.
Police said that at around 12.30pm, a Holden Apollo veered to the left-hand side of Woodford Dale Road, onto the grass, hitting a culvert/driveway.
Sergeant Harley Willox of Maclean police said it appeared the vehicle became airborne and flipped, landing on its roof.
The cause of the accident was being investigated.
