Youth hit the surf

By EMMA CORNFORD

THE WEATHER may be cooling down, but that did not stop around 20 Yaegl youth from grabbing boards and hitting the surf on Saturday for the Youth Week Surf School at Yamba.

Event co-organiser, Helen Tyas Tunngal, said the day had been 'fantastic' for the boys.

"We had very enthusiastic participants and Jeremy was really impressed with their enthusiasm and how quickly they got into the surfing. Even people who regularly use the beach commented on how good the group was," she said.

The school, taught by previous Australian junior surf champion Jeremy Walters, was funded by a council Youth Week grant.

"As a group they made my job really easy. They were up and riding so quickly and ... given the opportunities there could be some potential future champions among them," Mr Walters said.

The day was not just about surfing, with participants also playing touch football on the beach and cooking a barbecue lunch afterwards.

"It was a really worthwhile activity and the kids really showed their appreciation at the opportunity to surf with a professional teaching them," Ms Tyas Tunngal said.
