Aquatic centre opens in time for big crowd to beat heat

THE Grafton Aquatic Centre, having been delayed by almost a fortnight from it's usual Spring opening at the start of the school holidays, finally opened its gate on Saturday - two days before school resumes.

Shift manager Bruce Durrington said Saturday's heat drew a large crowd but numbers subsided to a more manageable level yesterday.

"It was a good family day with the slide and diving boards in full operation and well used," he said.

Mr Durrington did not wish to comment on the delay but it is understood Clarence Valley Council fell behind on its maintainance schedule in the lead-up to the opening.

The facility will now be opened on weekdays from 5.30am-7pm, Saturdays 8am-7pm and Sundays 10am-6pm. The Grafton Aquatic Centre may stay open past it's usual seasonal close next Easter.
