COONABARABRAN'S  Rebecca Artis fired a record second round 66 to grab the halfway lead in the RACV Australian Ladies Masters at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast.

A leading amateur in this event in 2009 behind Katherine Hull when she played as Rebecca Flood, the Gold Coast-based Artis began her second round with a bogey before surging into the lead reeling off five birdies in her last seven holes with her newly adopted  "left hand low" (reverse) putting grip.

"I started the round with a bogey. They say you start a good round with a bogey, so I'll take that." she said.

Artis made the putting change last week with immediate results finishing fourth in the Victorian Open.

"It got to the point if I didn't do something with my putting I didn't feel like I could go forward. I had to make the change and it's working at the moment."

After rounds of 71-65 she leads by three shots from exciting English teenager Charley Hull (70-70)  and talented 19 year-old Korean Eun Woo Choi (69-71).

Hull's round though was not without drama.

The 18 year-old  became unsettled posting a couple of bogeys on her homeward nine after her group was put on the clock for slow play midway through her round.

Meanwhile defending champion Cheyenne Woods --  who shot 16 under to win last year --  scraped into the weekend action after  scrambling to an even par  73 following her opening five-over 78 to be five over and 14 shots behind Artis.

"It was horrible today, it was rough out there," Woods told APN after a bold attempt to eagle on her final hole.

"Hopefully I will be able to play on the weekend and make up for it," she added before heading off to see her first game of rugby league with her mum and Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser.
