Man charged over fatal car crash

AN Ashby man, charged over a car crash that killed a Yamba woman, has pleaded not guilty to negligent driving occassioning death.

Graham Beamer, 45, answered the charge at Maclean Local Court on Tuesday.

Beamer, of Murrayville Road, owns a Clarence Valley treelopping business.

The accident that fatally injured retiree Judy Young happened on the morning of November 24.

Ms Young was the passenger in a ute driven on Yamba Road. Police allege the ute collided with the defendant's Toyota Land Cruiser when Beamer turned right from North Bank Road on to Yamba Road.

The force of the collision tore the ute's tray from its cabin and destroyed one side of the vehicle.

Ms Young was taken to Maclean District Hospital with critical injuries. She was transferred to Gold Coast Hospital and later died.

Information about Ms Young's injuries has not been made public. The coroner's office is yet to release its report on the death.

The 63-year-old driver of the ute, a man, suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Beamer was questioned by police after the accident, and released pending further investigation. He was formally charged in February.

The matter was adjourned for mention on May 12. A hearing date is expected to be set down on that date.
