Atlanta a challenging adventure for divers

RECENTLY a group of local divers was entertained by avid underwater explorer and cave-diving instructor Liam Allen.

Liam is a witty Irishman who exudes self-confidence and calmness.

A member of Global Underwater Explorers, he spoke to the group about his experiences diving the USS Atlanta: an American navy warship which was damaged by the Japanese and friendly fire during the naval battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.

She was finally ordered by her captain to be scuttled in Iron Bottom Sound off the island of Guadalcanal.

The ship lies in 135m of water. This is 100m deeper than the recommended depth for recreational scuba diving. It took Liam and his team 10 minutes to descend to the ship on each dive.

Time spent exploring the ship on each dive averaged around 30 minutes.

It then took more than five hours for the divers to ascend to the surface after each dive.

This was necessary for them to avoid decompression sickness.
