Get the kids into rugby union

TRY Rugby kicks off in Grafton tomorrow and girls and boys keen to take part are being encouraged to sign up with Grafton Junior Rugby Union.

Players can sign up from 5.30pm-6.30pm on any Friday until the Easter Holidays.

Try Rugby is expected to provide players with a great introduction to the new season.

Grafton Junior Rugby Union will run its own junior competition, with games at Rugby Park, South Grafton, every Friday night during the second term of the school year.

This year’s competition will feature some changes to the way the game is played, with the modifications to be incorporated around Australia.

The new Kids Pathway, for players from under-six to under-12, incorporates small-sided games, with fewer players on the field and rules that promote attacking play.

The aim of the new approach is to provide a series of age-specific modified rugby games.

The modified games have been designed to develop the individual skills, fitness and team work of all players in accordance with their physical maturity and understanding of the game.

The philosophy of the new Kids Pathway is child-centred and ensures all players receive the greatest possible participation and enjoyment from playing rugby.

Why the change?

The new Kids Pathway has been developed to:

Increase activity levels for maximum participation and enjoyment.

Meet the developmental needs of young rugby players in line with the safety focus of the modern game.

Provide an integrated and consistent approach to the development of junior players, coaches and referees across the country.

What’s different?

With fewer players on the field, players are guaranteed more opportunity to carry the ball, run into space, support teammates and score tries.

As a result, players will gain improved skills, a greater sense of achievement and higher levels of enjoyment.

Registration is every Friday night for all junior players from ages 6-17.

Grafton Junior Rugby Union will be fielding teams in the Far North Coast competition for under-13, under-14, under-15, under-16 and 17-year age groups.
