Aussie garden guru drops by Fingal to lend a helping hand
HOST of TV's Gardening Australia and Costa's Garden Odyssey Costa Georgiadis dropped by Fingal Public School yesterday.
The charismatic landscape architect turned celebrity was touring the Tweed to take a look at student's bush tucker and vegetable gardens.
He was stunned with the beauty of the Tweed Shire and particularly the hidden gem that is Fingal Head.
"I think the people up here are on strict orders not to tell anybody (about Fingal)," he said joking.
Costa was happy to see the kids from Fingal Public working hard to ensure a legacy that will continue for future students of the school.
"The best that we can teach them is to look after their health by looking after the land," he said.
"I can't think of a better way to spend my time.
"You've gotta have that enthusiasm."
Costa said he was a big fan of the Tweed and had travelled here before to visit friends at Nobby's Creek.
"Today I've basically come up to support the students," he said.
And it was made apparent throughout his visit that enthusiasm is certainly a trait Costa doesn't lack
He took time to chat with the kids about their bush tucker garden and even sampled some of the produce, much to the student's delight.
"He gets so excited about plants and stuff," student Birren Slabb said.
"The garden has been fun, except for the bush turkeys coming."
Student Budjerah Slabb said he'd been having a great time learning about bush tucker and sustainable living.
"We've been learning about bush plants and bush tucker and everything," he said.
"It's been really fun."
President of Fingal Head Coastcare Kay Bolton was thrilled Costa had taken interest in the student's hard work.
"The kids have loved the whole thing," she said.
"From the bush tucker to looking after their plants, it's been great.
"They even came to the nursery and did their own propagation and planting...the whole lot."
Costa will stick around to judge a Tweed Shire Council school Scarecrow Competition tomorrow at 9am, held at Murwillumbah Showgrounds.
