Aussie Nick Kyrgios surprises with upset win at French Open

HE was only in the main draw to replace injured wildcard and compatriot John Millman but teenage Aussie Nick Kyrgios will now face 10th seed Marin Cilic in round two tomorrow night after upsetting veteran Radek Stepanek 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (13-11) at the French Open.

The junior Australian Open champion became the first Aussie to win at Roland Garros but was trying to keep his feet on the ground ahead of the big clash.

"I'm focusing on all my recovery right now, stretching and whatever needs to be done to get me in the best shape for my next round," Kyrgios, the youngest player in the draw at 18, said.

Also yesterday defending champion Rafael Nadal had a huge scare in his bid for an unprecedented eighth title.

He dropped the opening set of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career before beating German Daniel Brands 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 6-3.
There was no such trouble for reigning women's champion Maria Sharapova, who needed all of 54 minutes to overpower 42nd-ranked Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan 6-2 6-1.

Li Na, champion in 2011, defeated Anabel Medina 6-3 6-4 Garrigues, while No.4-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat Shahar Peer 6-1 6-1.
