Australian woman raped, murdered, body dumped in toilet

AN Australian woman who travelled to south-eastern Africa for a diving trip was raped and murdered before her body was dumped in a toilet block, her family have been told.

Elly Warren, 20, was killed on Wednesday.

Her family believes the young Melbourne woman's body was found in a toilet block, although a guest house owner nearby said he had heard rumours her body was found on a beach.

Ms Warren was due to return to Australia on Monday, Fairfax reports.

Her mother Nicole Cafarella said Elly was "just one of those girls that wanted to travel the world and see everything she could before she was 30".

Elly was travelling through Africa alone, her mother said.

Elly was volunteering with an eco-research company and staying at Tofo Beach in Mozambique, a popular spot for travellers.

Her stint with the firm ended on Tuesday, but never made her next destination.

Elly's sister wrote on Facebook of the moment their mother learned of the horror.

"My sister was in Africa when my mum got a phone call from one of the backpackers saying her daughter has been murdered, as I heard that my heart dropped," she said.

"It is a parents' nightmare to get a phone call like this.

"Elly was always ambitious and had so many goals to go travelling but maybe she had too many.

"I want to say if you are thinking of going travelling or going overseas please be careful [about]who you go with. Rest in peace Elly, you are loved dearly."\
