Author searches depth of 'mother'
THE Mother’s Day weekend seemed the ideal time for Brooms Head author Valerie Albrecht to launch her book in the Clarence Valley, but Search for Mother looks not only at the person that gave birth to you but about the idea of ‘mother’ at many different levels.
The impetus for the book came from Albrecht’s own yearning to make a meaningful connection with her own mother and from the path her life was taking into the field of natural therapies in the maternity arena.
“I was working with bringing the ‘mother’ essence back into the health-care system,” Albrecht said, who had been contracted by NSW Health teaching pre- and post-natal yoga and massage and staff and patient massage in NSW hospitals. “I felt I wanted to write something that could be shared and would contribute to health care,” she said.
As she began writing, Albrecht discovered that the idea of ‘mother’ was not limited to the biological, but encompassed adoptive mothers, mother earth and spiritual mothers.
“It is about the essence of ‘mother’ which is the need to be nurtured,” Albrecht said.
Drawing on both her personal and professional experiences of ‘mother’ and maternity from Australia, India, Kenya and the US, Albrecht finished Search for Mother eight years after its inception.
A three-month book launch and speaking tour in the US saw Albrecht become the biggest-selling new author for her publishers, Inkwell Productions.
Now settled in Brooms Head, Albrecht hopes to bring her knowledge and experience of pre- and post-natal yoga and natural therapies to the Clarence Valley.
“My passion is in education and about a change of consciousness in health care where the whole patient is being cared for,” Albrecht said.
She continues her involvement in parenting classes at Maclean Hospital this year and pre- and post-natal yoga classes and massage in Brooms Head and Maclean and can be contacted on 6646 7362 or 0406 052.
Albrecht will launch her book locally tomorrow at Riverside Books, Maclean and on Sunday at the Yamba Golf Club.
Search for Mother is about the essence of ‘mother’ and the need to be nurtured.
