Back to basics for GHA juniors

HOCKEY: For the past three weeks every Sunday the future stars of the hockey have been put through their paces for the Hockey NSW Centre of Development program.

Hockey NSW regional coaching coordinator Rick Sampson said the Under 13 and Under 15 boy and girl juniors have been improving in their basic skills despite some hot conditions.

"We've been doing a lot of drills focusing on the basic core skills of passing, trapping and receiving," he said.

"I've been noticing them improve, so hopefully they're learning something as well that they can take back to their own clubs.

"It's been good having local coaches helping out as well. It's a learning experience for them, and it's been pretty good that we've had at least one coach from other regions joining us so they get to learn from each other as well."

With Hockey NSW hosting selection trials in Newcastle this weekend for U13 and U15 teams for both boys and girls, Sampson said there are some talented players coming through the ranks.

"I think there'll be a few players from GHA selected in both of the teams," he said.
