Background checks to find out history of DV

THE ball is rolling on moves to allow NSW residents to check their partners' backgrounds for a history of domestic violence.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward announced the proposed creation of a domestic violence register before the March election.

On Thursday the government released a discussion paper and called for public feedback.

Ms Goward said the program aimed to "hold offenders to account and prevent people being kept in the dark".
