Barber sharpens up for Movember

A TWEED barber is preparing for the season of the mo, with residents sprouting moustaches to raise vital funds and awareness this month.

Men around the world will be grooming moustaches during the month to raise funds and awareness for men's health issues such as prostate cancer and depression.

Gary Hartley of Crinkles Barber Shop said the shop gets an influx of men sporting the facial billboard for men's health during Movember.

"People normally just grow them for that month and get rid of them, there's not much maintenance," he said.

Since its initiation in 2003, the campaign has become increasingly popular among Australian men.

Tweed doctor Barry Kirby was ready for the month ahead, getting his moustache trimmed yesterday in preparation for what he thinks is a great initiative.

"It's one way men can promote awareness for prostate cancer, which is one of Australia's biggest killers," he said.

"Not many hairstylists know how to style a mo, but a good old fashioned barber will always do it."

Last year, Australians raised $25 million for the cause, with this year shaping up to have similar success.
